Techno Takeover episode 3
My review for a song where a guy can feel "I love you's" bleeding and supposedly has a really choppy sentence structure for a chorus. The Emergency by BT
"The Emergency" - BT
Hello people reading this!
I am Pugsly and it's time for another Techno Takeover! As you can see in the title above I picked "The Emergency" by classically trained and Grammy nominated musician Brian Wayne Transeau aka BT.
Who is BT another random techno artist?
Nope not at all, he is quite famous according to Wikipedia. With a boat load of singles/EPs compilations, and remixes with various artists like Diana Ross Depeche Mode Sarah McLachlan, Korn and the Crystal Method as some of the names under his remixes, he's worked on movie and video game scores for you game music lovers.
To name a few he's worked on:
- Die Hard trilogy 2: Viva Las Vegas (complete score)
- Need for Speed: Underground (2003) "Kimosabe" ft. Wildchild
- Dance Dance Revolution Extreme (2004) "Simply being loved (Somnambulist)
As for movies:
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (credited as Libra Presents Taylor)
- American Pie
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
- The Fast and the Furious
- The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Last but not least some of the film scores:
- Driven
- The Fast and the Furious
- Stealth
- Catch and Release
He also has a long list of collaborations with names like Britney Spears, NSync, Tiesto, David Bowie, and Armin Van Buuren and so on. Yeah this guy is pretty legit if you look at his Wikipedia page you'll see his full credits there, I'm not telling you everything then there's no point in doing you own research.
Hey speaking of DJ Tiesto, how can you have a techno review series without having a DJ Tiesto song?!
Because I haven’t gotten around to it, jeez calm down.
If you're not a fan of the stutter edit, it's his specialty so you might not like BT. If you have no clue what it is, "This technique consists of taking a small fragments of sound and then repeating it rhythmically" says Wikipedia. This history is getting quite long, so I'm skipping to the album, These Hopeful Machines. It was released in February on the second in 2010 and is his sixth studio album. The nomination was for the best Electronic/Dance album at the 2011 Grammys. Emergency is the fifth single and released September 28 of that year. The album was released online to digital retailers apparently as two large tracks to preserve the feel of the album. Not sure what that means...
Onto the song information, on the album the song is nearly eleven minutes long but the music video is only three minutes long so we're using this version, even though there's like a five minute long version and I really like that one. Now that we've taken care of that, we can move on to the lyrics (and video)!
Verse one:
"I watch you in the candlelight
My hand is in your hands
The neon lights have all gone down
We make our future plans"
That first line seems slightly creepy until he gets to the second line. There's an awkward pause between the two lines so it's not like my head is in the gutter, he did that to himself. Anyways, the video cuts out most of the music interludes. Is he aware that there’s also sun light in the room so he doesn’t really need the candles… anyways at the end of the first verse there's a short break that is cut out completely it's highly annoying and for some reason YouTube no longer has the five minute version. So I am literally switching between my Ipod and YouTube to do this review... one last thing, he's singing to a lover, aw how cute.
Verse two:
I wanted things to get better
I was in pain
I wanted you to be my lifeline
Wait that doesn't make any sense... is his relationship falling apart? Did it already fall apart? When I first heard the song I thought it said "I wanted pain," not "I was in pain" I didn't realize it but if the verse was "I wanted things to get better, I wanted pain, I wanted you to be my life line," it totally contradicts itself or leads us to believe he is a sadomasochist.
Verse three:
"I wanted love to get better
I wait in line
For something I knew that I would get to keep"
That is the first verse that says a million things at once with three simple lines. What it is saying you can decide because I am not telling you, and even if I had a definite answer of what that verse meant I still wouldn’t tell you. Bringing up the music video it makes no sense. There's a girl in a bikini and he's playing the piano and singing to the camera.
After this, the interlude is cut out and it goes straight into the chorus... the really long chorus...
Chorus:
"Your "I love you"
Your "I love you"
Your "I love you"
And I can feel it bleeding
Your "I love you"
Your "I love you"
Today is the day
That I love you
Your "I love you"
Your "I love you"
Your "I love you"
And I can feel it bleeding
Your "I love you"
Your "I love you"
Today is the day
That I love you"
I have no clue why I love you is in quotes. Is he trying to say, "You're like I love you"? If so he’s missing a good chunk of the conversation… I don't understand why it's like that at all...What can you feel bleeding? You can't bleed I love yous that's physically impossible. I'm also not sure if this is a love song or a: my relationship is falling apart song... I don't even know if the song knows what it is... There's a short break in the song at the end of the chorus I think it's the only music interlude they kept in... Nope I lied, the break in the video is only 7 seconds and the other on is 45.
The next verse, (verse four):
"The flashing lights have gone away
Emergency has passed
The future's right in front of me
And I won't finish last"
When was there even an emergency and what was it? How did it pass, did you do anything to help it pass or was it something. The music video has nothing worth commenting on, it's just a lot of pointing and some scenes in the water at a beach and Brian walking around a lot.
The chorus comes up again after the cut out interlude and it's the end of the song. The song is a good one that's why it's been reviewed, the music video disappointed me that nothing went on at all... and they could have kept the 5 minute version for the music video but no YouTube got rid of it and we're stuck with three and ten minute versions. I feel irritated about the whole thing but there's nothing I can do.
So that was "The Emergency" by BT (Did I mention he's part Romanian?) He was born in America to Romanian parents, which means he’s Romanian. You know who else is Romanian? This guy is:
