Ciaranred comicbook reviews: Marvel Civil War. as well as a bit of my back story.
Hello Ciaranred here with my first comic book review of the Marvel crossover event Civil War. Marvel's Civil War was a hugh comic book event that lasted from 2006 to 2007 and encumbered most of Marvels ongoing titles at the time. The series was a critial success financialy and was very popular at the time. Now before i go on about the comic, i want to give some background on how it got me into comics in the first place.
In 2006, i wasn,t in the best of places, nothing to serious like depression or sucidical tendices (not making fun of them just clarifying that it was not ethier of these) , but ah how to put it, i was misrable, i was constantly trying to fit in and be normal. You know watch sports, talk about the latest football match, talk bout attractive Girls (Okay that wasn,t to hard to do), like what others liked. The thing is unless your sport is Quidditch or Blitzball or Dragon Lancing, i have no interest in it. The problem is that people in Ireland start to think you odd and being unpatriotic when you don,t like Sports such as Gaelic Football and Hurling, that helped revive the Irish Spirit back in the times of old. (in the year god only knows)
Anyway i felt like an outcast and the thing was that i was afraid because i honestly didn,t know what to do with myself, if i couldn,t be like everyone else (ya i didn,t know what original thought was yet). One day i was invited by a friend of mine who we shall call James to come with him to town. I accepted and was stuck listening to him talk about how he slept with all these girls and so on. I managed to slip away from him.while he was trying and failing badly to flirt with some girls he came accross. I wondered about till i came across a weird shop called Otherrealms.
I thought it looked like an Interesting shop, since in the windows it had poster showing comicbook characters amnd even a stand cutout of Han Solo and Chewbacca, so i entered and began looking round. All over the place were toys, Manga, Roleplaying games, and comics. It was a shock to the system i can tell ya that much now anyway. I mean up this point i thought all the fun things like Power Rangers, superheroes, dugeons and Dragons Sci Fi, were just for kids, but boy was i wrong.
Otherrealms opened my eyes to something else, that i didn,t have to be like everyone else espeically if i was board because being different had alot more to offer. So at this point i went to look at the comics. Oh man was i suprised at what was there. Superman, Batman Detective comics Wonder Woman Transformer, G.I.Joe Star Wars. It was amazing but one of the things i noted was that most of the Marvel titles was covered under a banner called Marvel Civil War. I wasn,t sure what to make of it but it looked interesting. I wanted to buy an issue but sadly i had no money. Ciaran fail! It would be two months before i picked up the title and began to actually read comic books.
So now that i have driven off half my readers with my boring and stupid past, time for the review Civil War is a Cross overevent that revovles around the passage of the Super Human Registration Act that would see all Superheroes registering with the United States Government and working for the Governement. This led to a split among the superhero community Those who support the registration act such as Ironman, Reed Richarads and Ms Marvel. Then the other side are those who oppose the Registration act, lead by Captain America, Luck Cage and Cable (Well at the start anyway.
The war raged across the America with many groups and titles being effected. For instance Marvel first family was split with Reed Richards supporting the act,, Johnny Storm and Susan Storm opposing the act and the Thing who doesn,t wish to get invovled goes to France to remain Neutral in the War. Ms Marvel who has started to become an influenceal character is hunting down the hero Archinina and about to bring hell to her life.
The Comic is well written by Scottish Writer Mark Millair and art by Steve Niven and boy do these two work well together. The art is well done and the character and interesting. Millair certainly know how to write each Character he given and show how the war is effecting them. He also writes some of the most amazing scenes including
Captain Americas fight on the Shield Helicarrier,

The fall of the Young Avengers (not what ya think)

The Pro Regisreation ambush,

the return of Thor

The Final battle of the Civil War

Now the series does have some minor problems, such as certain characters can be viewed as outing out of character such as Ironman and Captain America. Now i personally felt that both characters were acting fine considering what was they were now facing and fighting for. Think about it. Ironman is trying desperately to show the Government that Superheroes shouldn,t be locked up and enslaved but instead can be worked with to benifit everyone, yet ome of these heroes have gone rogue and have started going about destroying things and breaking the law, making them villians. So you have no choice but to lock them up or else risk letting all heroes getting screwed other by the Government.
The Captain America of course has the issue where the Government has finally gone to far and is not only trying to destroy the personal freedom of many innocent Americans who for one reason or another have powers and used them to help people and make thier lives a living hell. They will also abuse these people and turn them into weapons and other horrible possibilities. You have no choice but to the fight the governemtn and not stop till they see that they are wrong, even if you have to fight your friends who have clearly lost sight of thier values.
I can see why both Characters are acting a bit differently then usally and that clearly the effects of the war have effected them. This series is great, i would gladly recommend this series to all who wish to stargt reading comicbooks or wish to read a comic where superhero beat the bejesus out of each other. I give this comic five out of five
Next time i think i will do my first Toku review of Kamen Rider The First. Till then Nikki Nikki
